"With this piece I attempt to continue the cross-cultural conversation that I started to have while traveling in Bulgaria and during my stay here in Gorna Lipnitsa. When I leave this place I will take with me the experiences– big and small – that I had while in Bulgaria and I hope that with this piece people can carry on with the conversation after I’m gone. I decided to do an installation that presents small sections and details of the experiences I had in the village, the people I met as well as things and objects that I brought with me from my journey."

"My art photography project in the village of Gorna Lipnitsa focuses on archetypal vignettes from the life of the village related to anxieties of an ending and an expected new beginning. It both describes and is made out of the end of a world while proposing a new beginning for its ideas. I used expired film (made in an extinct country, the former German Democratic Republic) and printed it on expired paper made by companies which no longer exist. The passage of time has left its mark on the photographs and the outdated technologies have caused their distressed look, but their dreams and anxieties have acquired a new life."

Hole
"This work is made by stop motion animation. A monitor installed into the hole of a library in the old school. From the hole, you can peek people eating and cooking. The video is showing kind of our ordinaries of life. This work idea is based on "mementо mori". This Latin phrase means, "Remember you will die". In ancient Rome was used to advocate living for the pleasures of the moment because you may die tomorrow. This is the same concept described in the Bible, Isaiah 22:13, "Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die". I present a contemporary treatment "mement mori" into a small hole as the theme of the old school project in Gorna Lipnitsa, “The End as a Beginning, Gorna Lipnitsa and the Beginning of the World - 2012”."

A New Beginning
"The series of images is created using the technique freezelight /light graffiti/. The idea is associated with the concept of the residence as: frozen light displays current residents of the school in the past / their shadows, ghosts, memories of them /, thus the circle of time is closed."
Raya Hristova, 2012

The process of working on "The End as a Beginning: Gorna Lipnitsa and the Beginning of the World, 2012" is a ritual performance that attempts to use the power of thought, formed at a precise moment, to change reality and shape the future.
